Thread Locker: Tetraethylene Glycol Dimethacrylate with Cumene Hydroperoxide, Set When Air Is Shut Out (Krieble, US 2,895,950)

An anaerobic thread locker. A little cumene hydroperoxide stirred into tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate stays liquid as long as air reaches it. Shut between threads or plates, away from air, it sets into a tough resin and locks them. Result: a liquid that keeps a year or more in a half-full bottle and locks steel in 40 minutes to 5 hours, depending on how much catalyst it holds. Heat speeds it up. Source: V. K. Krieble (American Sealants Company), US 2,895,950 (1959), Example 1. Unknown: how the tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate is made; the patent uses a bought commercial grade. Not given: bond strength. Instructions

1

Mix in the catalyst

At room temperature, stir cumene hydroperoxide into commercial-grade tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate, measuring by volume. Anything from 0.1 to 10 % works; the patent prefers 2 to 10 %. Goggles and gloves: cumene hydroperoxide is an organic peroxide, keep it cool.

Materials for this step:

Cumene HydroperoxideCumene Hydroperoxide5 parts by volume (0.1-10)

Store it with air

Keep the mixture in a container with air space, preferably polyethylene, which lets air through. Bottles stored half full stayed liquid for a year or more at room temperature.

Apply to the threads

Put a few drops on the threads before joining the parts. Once air is shut out it sets. Average set times between steel plates at 25-27 °C, by catalyst share: 10 %, 42 min; 5 %, 52 min; 2 1/2 %, 74 min; 1 1/4 %, 84 min. With 0.1 % it takes about five hours.

4

Speed it up with heat

Heat sets it faster: the 0.1 % mixture between glass slides, warmed to 100 °C over a steam bath, locked them in five minutes. Ours: a water bath over a burner as the steam bath.
