Trisodium Phosphate: Phosphoric Acid, Soda, then Caustic Soda

Trisodium phosphate is the strongly alkaline sodium phosphate used to throw down cobalt violet. Thorpe (1913): soda added to phosphoric acid until alkaline gives disodium phosphate; excess caustic soda turns that into the trisodium salt, which crystallises in six-sided prisms. Caustic soda burns skin: gloves and goggles. The picture: trisodium phosphate (Wikimedia Commons).

Phosphoric acid and soda

Goggles and gloves on. Dilute 100 g of 85 % phosphoric acid with water and stir in soda ash until the liquid is alkaline to litmus (about 92 g). Filter.

Materials for this step:

Add caustic soda

Dissolve about 40 g of caustic soda in a little water and add it to the disodium phosphate solution: a little more than the 35 g the equation needs.

Crystallise

Concentrate and let it crystallise; the free alkali stays in the mother liquor. Drain the six-sided prisms and keep them in a closed jar.
