Uranium: Green Oxide and Sugar Carbon in the Electric Furnace (Moissan, Thorpe 1913)
Very pure carbon from sugar takes the oxygen from green uranium oxide at the heat of the electric furnace. A second heat in a uranium-oxide-lined crucible, shielded by titanium from the air's nitrogen, burns off the last carbon.
Result: uranium metal, white and heavy (density 18.7). Radioactive and poisonous.
Source: Thorpe, Dictionary of Applied Chemistry vol. 5 (1913), p. 586, after Moissan (Compt. rend. 1893, 116, 349). Not given: time and how the purifying heat is applied. Picture drawn by Youblob.
