Vanadium Tetrachloride: Oxytrichloride and Chlorine Passed over Red-Hot Sugar Charcoal (Roscoe 1913)

The vapour of vanadium oxytrichloride, with plenty of dry chlorine, is passed again and again over a long column of pure sugar charcoal at dull red heat; the charcoal takes the oxygen and vanadium tetrachloride condenses. Result: dark brownish-red vanadium tetrachloride, boiling at 154 °C. Source: Roscoe and Schorlemmer, A Treatise on Chemistry vol. 2 (1913), pp. 931-932. Not given: number of passes. Chlorine is poisonous. Picture drawn by Youblob.
