White Exterior Paint: Zinc White Ground in Boiled Linseed Oil

A plain white paint for outdoor work: zinc white ground into boiled linseed oil and thinned with turpentine (Thorpe, 1912). Zinc white is non-poisonous and does not blacken in foul air, but it dries more slowly than lead white, so give each coat time. The picture: our own drawing.

Instructions

1

Weigh pigment and oil

Weigh the zinc white and the boiled oil: whites take less than 20 parts of oil to 100 of pigment. Boiled oil is the oil for outdoor work.

Materials for this step:

Zinc Oxide PowderZinc Oxide Powder1 kg

2

Grind it in

Grind the pigment into the oil a little at a time with the muller on a glass slab, until the paste is smooth with no grit.

3

Thin with turpentine

Stir in turpentine until the paint brushes out easily. Less oil gives a harder, less glossy coat.
