Woven Wire Screen Cloth: Hardened Crimped Steel Rods Locked by Driven Straight Rods (Robins, US 2,154,530, 1939)

Screen cloth for gravel and stone wears out fast unless the steel is hard, but hard steel cracks when it is bent in weaving. Robins crimps the rods first, hardens them, and lays them up in layers without bending; straight hardened rods driven in endwise lock the whole panel under spring pressure. Result: coarse screen cloth, openings 5/8 in and up, hardened to as much as 60 Rockwell C; it lasted about twice as long. Source: Robins, US 2,154,530 (1939). He names only steel; a high-carbon steel is ours, since only a hardenable steel reaches 60 Rockwell C. Not given: crimp pitch, hardening heat and quench. Picture drawn by Youblob.

Instructions

1

Crimp the rods

Cut steel rods, about 3/16 in diameter or more, to length and press-crimp three sets of them between dies. Keep a fourth set straight (no more than a quarter of all rods).

Materials for this step:

High-Carbon Steel Wire RodHigh-Carbon Steel Wire Rod1 as required

Tools needed:

Stamping PressStamping Press
2

Harden all the rods

Heat-harden the crimped and the straight rods before assembly; crimping first spares the dies. Robins reached 60 Rockwell C. Heat and quench: not given.

Tools needed:

Muffle FurnaceMuffle Furnace
Quench BucketQuench Bucket
3

Lay up three crimped sets

Lay crimped set 1 in parallel on a table; lay set 3 across it, bends in register; lay set 2 parallel to set 1 on top, its bends opposite. Openings about 5/8 in or more.

Tools needed:

WorkbenchWorkbench
4

Drive in the straight rods

Drive the straight rods endwise, above set 2 and below set 1, alternating with set 3. They lock the panel by spring pressure without bending any rod for good; pulled out again, worn rods can be replaced.
