Wool Cloth Woven in Plain Weave on a Rigid Heddle Loom

Plain weave is the most basic weave: each weft thread goes over one warp thread and under the next. Woven from undyed wool yarn, the cloth comes off the loom loose and soft, still oily and unshrunk; fulling cleans and thickens it afterwards. The picture: plain weave seen close up.

Instructions

1

Warp the loom

Measure the warp (step 5), tie it to the front roller, and thread one end through each slot and each hole of the heddle. Wind it on the back roller under even tension.

Weave

Lift the heddle, pass the shuttle through, lower the heddle and pass it back, beating each pick in lightly with the heddle. Lay the weft in at a slant so the edges do not draw in.

Advance and keep going

Wind the woven cloth onto the front roller as you go, keeping the beat even so the cloth has the same number of picks per cm all along.

Cut off

Weave to the end of the warp, cut the cloth off, and knot the warp ends in groups so the weft cannot unravel. It is now loom-state cloth, ready for fulling.
