A helical spring wound with its coils touching, so it resists being pulled apart rather than squashed. A hook or loop is formed at each end to take the pull, and that end is almost always where it fails, because the wire is bent sharply there. Real springs differ in wire diameter, coil diameter, free length and in how much initial tension was wound into the closed coils.
