Liquid petrolatum (liquid paraffin): a clear, colourless oil of heavy petroleum hydrocarbons, without odour or taste, as described in the 1907 US Pharmacopoeia. It is the historical medicinal form of mineral oil. It is not the same as today's food-grade mineral oil, which must also pass a later test for aromatic compounds.
