Hydrochloric acid (spirit of salt, muriatic acid): hydrogen chloride gas dissolved in water. A strong, fuming acid, sold from dilute solutions up to about 37–40 % (specific gravity about 1.2). Used to pickle and clean metals, dissolve limestone and minerals, make chlorides and adjust pH. Corrosive to skin, eyes and lungs; always add acid to water.
