Stone Point Chisel: a Point for Marble and Granite, Forged from Square Steel (Holford, 1907)

The point is the hard-stone carver's roughing tool, struck with a hammer to break stone away in furrows. Frederick Holford's 20th Century Toolsmith (1907) gives the granite cutter's point: drawn down very thin at the extreme end but with a very short taper, best forged from 7/8-inch square steel because a square point sits on the stone and does not twist in the hand. It is hardened no more than 1/2 inch back and dipped at least an inch deep so the temper draws very slowly; for granite to a dark straw, for marble a little harder, to a very light straw. Holford gives no length and no carbon content for these tools; those are unknown here. Source: F. J. Holford, The 20th Century Toolsmith and Steelworker (1907), pp. 122-123, 130 and p. 21 (the hardening bath). Picture: his Fig. 62 (point above, chisel below).

Read Holford

"Points and chisels are made as a rule from 7/8 octagon steel, but points will be better if made from 7/8 square, as a point made from square steel will be held much easier to the stone, and will not twist round in the hand so easy as if made from octagon steel."

Draw the point

Forge 7/8-inch square steel down to a point, very thin at the extreme end but with a very short taper (Fig. 62). Keep a very coarse file at hand to straighten the end after hammering. The length is not given (unknown).

Harden and temper

Heat no farther back than 1/2 inch, taking care not to overheat the thin end. Quench by dipping deep, at least an inch, into the hardening bath (p. 21: clean water, best a brine with as much salt as it will dissolve, large and cold), so the temper runs back very slowly. For marble let it stop at a very light straw; for ordinary granite a dark straw.

History and honest limits

Holford groups points with chisels, bush hammers, mash hammers, granite hammers, bull sets and bull chisels as the granite cutter's kit, and says marble tools are made the same way with a slightly harder temper. The length and the carbon of the steel are not given; a square tool steel bar stands for the 7/8-inch square steel.
