The Stove-Side Drier: Frames That Fold Down Over the Heat
On a wet day the only warm place in the house is by the kitchen stove, but a line strung there is in the way of the cook.
George T. Sampson of Dayton, Ohio, received US 476,416, dated 7 June 1892 (filed 24 June 1891), for a clothes-drier whose object "is to suspend clothing in close relation to a stove by means of frames so constructed that they can be readily placed in proper position and put aside when not required for use".
This rung works out the energy needed to dry a load and how long a stove takes to supply it, then weighs a load drying on a rack near a heat source.

"This frame is shown in a vertical position, as when not in use, and to bring it to a horizontal position over the stove it is only necessary to turn the button 2."
The supplementary frame "is so jointed and the legs so hinged that the whole may be folded in a comparatively small compass."

Weigh a load drying by the heat
Weigh a load of washing dry. Wash it, wring it and weigh it again: the difference is the water to remove.
Set the drying rack a safe distance from a stove or radiator, never touching it, with a tray beneath for drips. Weigh the load every hour until it reaches its dry weight. Note the room temperature with the thermometer.
Work out the energy from the notebook for your water mass, and compare the drying time with the notebook's estimates.

**George T. Sampson** of Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, filed US 476,416 on 24 June 1891; it is dated 7 June 1892. The frame's side arms also carry hooks for cooking utensils.
**Honest limits.** The notebook counts only the heat to evaporate the water, and the share of the stove's heat reaching the wash is a guess. Air flow and humidity decide how fast it really goes. The loads, water held and stove output are examples. Your hourly weighings are the measurement.
