Growing Rubber Trees From Seeds — From Nursery to Large-Scale Planting
Fresh rubber seeds from the mother garden are germinated in moist sand beds, sprouting after 7-14 days. Seedlings are cared for in the nursery for 6-8 months before being transplanted to large-scale planting in rows with spacing of 7×3 meters. This blueprint connects from the seed harvesting stage until the seedlings are strong enough to survive in the field.
Instructions
Prepare seed beds
Prepare seed beds
Dig seed beds 1 meter wide, length depending on the quantity of seeds. Mix clean sand with decomposed organic fertilizer in the ratio of 3 parts sand : 1 part fertilizer. Level the surface and water evenly. Beds need good drainage — if water accumulates, seeds will rot.

Sow rubber seeds into furrows
Place the seed horizontally on the furrow surface, with the seed eye (seed hilum) facing downward. Distance between seeds: 2-3 cm. Gently press the seed into the sand about 1-2 cm deep — do not bury too deep because the seedling needs light for orientation.

Thin sand cover and shade
Apply a thin layer of sand 1-2 cm over the seeds. Cover the beds with coconut leaves, palm leaves or 50-70% shade cloth to retain moisture and prevent heavy rain from washing away the seeds. Ideal temperature for germination: 25-30°C.

Water evenly every day
Spray water lightly with a misting nozzle or watering can 2 times/day — early morning and late afternoon. Keep the bed moist but not waterlogged. If it rains heavily, you can skip watering. Lack of water is the leading cause of seeds not germinating.

Monitor germination (day 7-14)
Healthy seeds begin to germinate after 7 days — white roots emerge first, then the shoot grows upward. Normal germination rate: 60-80%. Seeds that do not germinate after 21 days should be removed — they are no longer viable.

Preparing potting soil for seedlings
Preparing potting soil for seedlings
Mix decomposed manure with sand in a 2:1 ratio. Pour the mixture into black PE nursery bags sized 15×25 cm (with drainage holes at the bottom). Arrange the bags in rows in the nursery, lightly compress the soil and water thoroughly before transplanting.

Transplant seedlings into nursery bags
When the seedling has 2 first leaves (approximately 10-15 cm tall), gently pull it out from the seedbed. Use a wooden stick to create a 5 cm deep hole in the center of the soil bag, place the seedling into it, and gently press the soil around the base. Water immediately after transplanting. Transplant in the cool afternoon to reduce heat shock.

Shade for seedlings first 2 weeks
Newly transplanted seedlings need 60-70% shading for the first 2 weeks. Then gradually reduce to 30%, and remove shade completely after 4 weeks. Plants need to gradually adapt to direct sunlight before being moved to the planting field.
Watering and daily care
Watering and daily care
Water 1 time/day in the early morning. Remove weeds growing in the pot — weeds compete for nutrients and water with the seedlings. Check for pests and diseases: young rubber plant leaves are often affected by scale insects and powdery mildew. If you see curled leaves or white powder, remove the diseased leaves.

First fertilization (2nd month)
After the seedling has stabilized for 6-8 weeks, apply composted manure around the base — 1 small handful/seedling. Do not apply chemical fertilizer to seedlings under 3 months old as it can burn roots. Organic fertilizer helps improve soil structure and provides slow-release micronutrients.

Assessment of standard seedlings (June-August)
Seedlings meet planting standards when: height 40-60 cm, firm stem (root diameter ≥ 1 cm), with 2-3 stable leaf layers, healthy root development (visible white roots through drainage holes in the pot). Remove stunted, curved, or diseased seedlings.
Choose suitable soil for planting
Choose suitable soil for planting
Rubber trees prefer red basalt soil or gray soil mixed with sand, good drainage, pH 4.5-6.0. In Vietnam, the Southeast region (Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, Tay Ninh) and Central Highlands (Gia Lai, Dak Lak) are the main growing areas. Avoid heavy clay soil or waterlogged areas.
Land clearing and vegetation removal
Land clearing and vegetation removal
Clear weeds and shrubs across the entire planting area. Do not burn — allow plant residues to naturally decompose into green manure. On sloped areas, retain grass cover between rows to prevent erosion.

HoeMark and dig planting holes
Mark and dig planting holes
Mark hole locations in rows: 7 meters spacing between rows, 3 meters between trees in a row (density ~475 trees/ha). Dig holes 60×60×60 cm in size. Mix excavated soil with 5-10 kg of decomposed manure, return to the hole and let it cure for 2-4 weeks before planting.

Plant seedlings at the beginning of the rainy season
Plant at the beginning of the rainy season (May-July in Southern Vietnam) so that the tree has sufficient water during the root establishment stage. Gently tear the nursery bag, place the tree in the center of the hole so that the root collar is level with the ground. Fill soil and lightly compact around the base.

HoeRegular watering in the first month
Regular watering in the first month
Water 5-10 liters of water per tree every 2-3 days in the first month if there is no rain. After the tree is established (when new leaves appear), gradually reduce watering. Mature rubber trees are drought-tolerant, but newly planted trees are very sensitive to water shortage.
Materials for this step:
Water10 litersPlant ground cover crops between rows
Plant ground cover crops between rows
Between rubber rows (7 meter spacing), plant legume ground cover crops such as Mucuna, Calopogonium, or Pueraria. Ground cover crops retain moisture, prevent erosion, and fix nitrogen naturally in the soil — significantly reducing fertilizer requirements in the first 3 years.
First year care
First year care
Weed around the tree base with a radius of 1 meter, 3-4 times/year. Apply fertilizer NPK 15-15-15 at a dose of 100g/tree, spread evenly around the base 30 cm away from the trunk, 2 times/year (beginning and middle of rainy season). Check for Corynespora leaf fall disease — common in young trees. Rubber trees from seed need 6-7 years to reach tapping age.
