Rocking Two-Section Barrel Churn: Cream Falls Through a Grate as the Barrel Tips End Over End
McLaughlin knew oscillating churns already existed; he claimed the way he built and hung his.
John McLaughlin of Goshen, Ohio, received US 9,117, dated 13 July 1852, for a churn barrel "composed of two sections, within a metallic clasp band, united to pivoted pendant bars," with "a grate J, composed of a circular rim and crossed bars" at the joint. A lever rocks it so the milk or cream is "carried up in one section, and allowed to descend, through a grate, into the lower section." Turned upright on a leg, the upper section lifts off to fill it.
This rung looks at the fall, then prints the grate and coupling ring, joins two containers into a barrel, hangs it on a frame, and makes butter.

"The operator then grasps the handle or lever N, and oscillates the barrel so as to present its ends uppermost, the one after the other, carrying the cream upward, and allowing it to descend through the grate into the lower section."

Print the grate (/uploads/blueprints/rocking-two-section-barrel-churn-grate.stl) and the coupling ring (/uploads/blueprints/rocking-two-section-barrel-churn-coupling-ring.stl); both need a 200 mm bed. Print in PETG at 0.2 mm layers, 30 % infill, 4 walls; wash before first use.

Take two identical round food-safe containers about 170 mm across. Join them mouth to mouth inside the coupling ring with the grate between, sealed with a food-safe gasket of leather; clamp with a strap. Fit a plug in one for drawing off the buttermilk.

Let the heavy cream stand until it reaches about 15 °C, checked with the thermometer. Pour in 1.5 litres. Rock the barrel end over end with the lever; time until the butter comes. Draw off the buttermilk, then open the barrel. Pour off the buttermilk, add cold water, churn a little and pour off again until it runs clear; work in a pinch of salt and weigh the butter.

History and honest limits
History and honest limits
**John McLaughlin** of Goshen, Clermont County, Ohio, received US 9,117, dated 13 July 1852. His sections were each like an ordinary dasher churn tub, one fitting within the other; a clamp screw through the clasp band bore on a plate on the barrel's head. He did not claim oscillating churns, only mounting the two-section barrel with its grate in the clasp band on pivoted pendant bars.
**Honest limits.** Two food-safe containers and printed parts stand in for his tubs. FDM prints hold food in their layer lines, so wash well and replace when worn. Your times and weights are the result.
