Sodium Oleate: Oleic Acid Boiled with Caustic Soda
Sodium oleate is the soap of oleic acid, used as an emulsifier. Hurst's works recipe, in Thorpe's Dictionary (1912), boils 112 lb of oleic acid in hot water with 16½ lb of caustic soda until the soap is fully formed. Here we stop at that soap solution. Caustic soda burns skin and eyes: goggles and gloves.
