The Folded-Steel Trowel: A V-Trough Blade From One Sheet
A thin flat trowel bends when you lever out a weed with tough roots; a thick one is heavy.
William B. Cleves of Binghamton, New York, received US 441,135, dated 25 November 1890 (filed 30 December 1889), for a trowel whose blade and shank are one sheet of metal "bent upon itself to form an angular longitudinally straight trough-shaped" blade. "Forming the blade and shank angularly, as described, greatly strengthens it and at the same time presents a long slim blade."
This rung works out how much stiffer a folded strip is than a flat one, then bends two strips of the same sheet, one flat and one folded, and loads them.

"Forming the blade and shank angularly, as described, greatly strengthens it and at the same time presents a long slim blade."
The trowel "is especially adapted for digging plantains and other weeds having fibrous roots of great strength, and the particular form preferably employed increases the strength and decreases the weight."

Bend a flat and a folded strip
Cut two identical strips from steel sheet. Leave one flat. Clamp the other along its middle in the vise and fold it to a V.
Clamp each at one end so the same length sticks out. Hang a weight from the free end and measure how far it drops with the ruler. Compare the two with the notebook's ratio.
Then dig out a deep-rooted weed with the garden trowel and note where it bends.

**William B. Cleves** of Binghamton, Broome County, New York, filed US 441,135 on 30 December 1889; it is dated 25 November 1890. The shank is driven into the handle and held by a pin.
**Honest limits.** The notebook treats the fold as sharp and the strip as uniform, and compares bending along the blade only. The strip size and angles are examples. Your measured deflections are the measurement.
