Antimony Trioxide: Roasted Antimony Fused with More Metal (Thorpe 1912)

Antimony trioxide is a white, fusible powder that turns to vapour at red heat. Powdered antimony heated in a shallow dish becomes antimony tetroxide. Fused with more metal, the tetroxide gives the trioxide, and the spare metal sinks. Source: Thorpe, Dictionary of Applied Chemistry vol. 1 (1912), Antimony. Not given: amounts, heats or times. The furnace and crucible are ours. Work under a hood with a respirator, because the oxide fumes at red heat. Picture drawn by Youblob.

Powder the antimony and roast it

Powder antimony and heat it in a shallow dish until it has turned into antimony tetroxide. Keep back some unroasted metal. Not given: heat and time. Work under a hood.

Fuse with unchanged metal

Fuse the tetroxide with unchanged antimony in a crucible. They react to antimony trioxide, and the spare metal sinks to the bottom. Ours: a lidded crucible, kept below red heat as far as you can, since the trioxide is volatile at red heat. Heated longer in air it goes back to the tetroxide.
