Dust Mask: Rigid Perforated Guard with a Replaceable Cloth Filter (Swindell, US 2,681,060, 1954)
A simple dust mask for workshops and plants. A rigid cup with air holes covers the nose and mouth. A cloth filter lines the inside and folds over the cup's rim, held by wire clips: the air passes through the cloth, and the cloth also pads the rim against the face. Change the cloth and the same mask can pass from worker to worker.
Result: a nose-and-mouth dust mask with a filter you can replace.
Source: M. E. Swindell, US 2,681,060 (1954). Unknown: sizes, how the cup is formed, the cloth. Picture: the patent drawing.

Make the guard
Make a rigid cup to cover the nose and mouth, of composition rubber, plastic, metal or another suitable material. Give it a narrow upright bulge at the front for the nose. Shape its edge to the face so it fits close at the bridge of the nose and the chin, and turn the whole edge outward as a curved lip. Make air holes in both the nose bulge and the mouth part. Not given: sizes, the number of holes, how it is formed.

Fit the filter and wear it
Lay a cup-shaped cloth filter in the hollow of the guard. Fold its edges over the lip and clamp them to the back of the lip with the clips. The cloth leaves an air space in front of the face and one between itself and the guard, and it pads the lip where it touches the face. Hook the strap into the holes and put the mask over the nose and mouth. Replace the cloth when it is used, or before the mask passes to another wearer. Not given: the cloth.
