Tannin Mordant Extracted from Oak Galls
Oak galls are rich in tannin (gallotannic acid). Tannin is a common mordant for cotton and linen: the fibre is tanned first, then metal mordants and dyes bind to it. Crush the galls, steep them in hot water, strain, and dry the liquid down to a brown powder.
