Two-Shaft Treadle Loom with a Split-Cane Reed

On a treadle loom the feet open the shed, leaving both hands for the shuttle. A wooden frame carries the warp beam and the cloth beam; two shafts carry the heddles that lift alternate warp threads; treadles tied to the shafts work them; a batten with a reed, once made of split cane, spaces the warp and beats the weft in. The picture: a peasant handloom from Romania, old engraving.

Shafts and heddles

Make two shafts, each a pair of light bars. Tie cotton string heddles between the bars, each with a small eye in the middle, all the same length (step 6). Hang both shafts from cords over a roller on top of the frame, so one rises as the other sinks.

Shave split cane into thin, even dents. Bind them upright between two pairs of wooden ribs with cotton thread wound between each dent, spacing them evenly. Mount the reed in a batten hung from the top of the frame so it swings to beat.
