Spoked Wheel

A solid disc of wood is heavy, splits along the grain, and wastes most of its material where nothing is happening. A spoked wheel puts wood only where the load travels — from the hub, out along the spokes, into the rim — and it is a genuinely subtle structure. The spokes are not evenly loaded: at any instant only the two or three at the bottom are carrying, in compression, while the rest wait their turn as the wheel rotates. The rim is built in segments called felloes, and an iron tyre is fitted red hot and quenched, so that as it shrinks it squeezes every joint in the wheel tight. A wheelwright assembles a structure that is loose until the tyre goes on and locked solid afterwards.

Compare a disc against spokes

Establish why anyone bothered.

  1. Cut a solid disc wheel and a spoked wheel of the same diameter from the same board.
  2. Weigh both.
  3. Load each at the rim and look for flexing or splitting.
The disc is far heavier and splits along the grain under load, because a disc has grain running one way and is loaded in every direction. The spoked wheel puts each piece of wood in line with its own grain, which is the strongest direction wood has.

Choose three woods for three jobs

A traditional wheel is not made of one timber, and the choices are reasoned.

  1. Hub (nave) — elm, because its interlocked grain resists splitting when a dozen mortises are cut into it.
  2. Spokes — oak, strong in compression along the grain.
  3. Rim (felloes) — ash, which bends and takes shock without splintering.
Three species chosen for three different failure modes. Elm is a poor structural timber generally and the best possible hub; that is materials selection by job rather than by quality.

Dish the wheel

A cart wheel is not flat. It is a shallow cone, and this surprises people.

  1. Set the spokes so they angle slightly outward from the hub, making a dish.
  2. Mount the wheel on an axle angled downward at the outer end, so the bottom spoke stands VERTICAL.
  3. Load it and see the bottom spoke take the weight in pure compression.
The dish resists sideways lurching, and the axle angle means the loaded spoke is upright at the moment it carries. A flat wheel takes the shock of a rut as a bending load on the spokes; a dished one takes it along their length.

Shrink the tyre on

The final assembly step is done with heat, and it is what makes the wheel rigid. Two people, gloves, water to hand.

  1. Make the iron tyre slightly SMALLER in circumference than the wheel.
  2. Heat it until it expands enough to drop over the rim.
  3. Drop it on and quench immediately with water.
As it cools it contracts and pulls every felloe joint and every spoke shoulder tight — the wheel that was loose in your hands becomes one rigid object. Get the allowance wrong and you either cannot fit it, or you crush the wheel and pull it out of shape. This is an interference fit at village-blacksmith scale.

History and context

Spoked wheels appear around 2000 BC in the Near East and transform the vehicle: a solid-wheeled ox cart is a slow load carrier, a light spoked wheel makes the war chariot possible. The technology spreads with astonishing speed, which is usually a sign that the advantage was overwhelming.

Wheelwrighting was a serious trade with its own tools and vocabulary — nave, felloe, stock, dish, strake — and it survived essentially unchanged into the twentieth century. George Sturt's The Wheelwright's Shop (1923) is the classic first-hand account of the craft as motor transport ended it, and it is unusually good on how much of the knowledge was in the hands rather than in writing.

The suspension insight is worth naming. In a modern wire-spoked bicycle wheel the spokes are in TENSION and the hub hangs from the upper spokes — the opposite of a cart wheel, whose wooden spokes work in compression and where the hub sits on the lower ones. Both are correct; wood is strong in compression and thin steel wire has no compressive strength at all, so each material dictates its own structure. Confusing the two is the commonest misunderstanding about wheels.

What ended it: pneumatic tyres and steel or alloy wheels. The last serious users of wooden spoked wheels were early motor cars — artillery wheels — and the trade now survives in restoration, carriage driving and the occasional gun carriage.
