The Ring-Set Lemon Squeezer: A Bowl Held in Its Handle by a Screwed Ring
A squeezer's bowl set loose in a wooden handle works free, and one fixed in for good cannot be taken out to clean or replace.
James L. Jensen of Brooklyn, New York, received US 104,159, dated 14 June 1870, for "the best means of inserting a lemon-squeezer in its handles", "forming an annular flange on the cup, but below the top thereof, placing it upon the open shoulder of the handle, and detachably fastening thereon an independent annular ring flush with the top." The bowl's flange rests in a stepped recess cut in the handle's face; a wooden ring fits between the bowl's top and the recess wall and is held by screws.
This rung works out what the ring's screws carry, then makes hinged hardwood handles with a tin bowl set in a stepped recess and held by a screwed ring, and squeezes lemons with it.

"I make the bowls A with a horizontal flange, B, on the outside, near the top, and provide an annular recess in the face of the handles C, to which they are to be attached. This recess is deeper than the thickness of the rim B, and it is widened on the plane of the top of the said rim when resting in the bottom. In this widened part a ring of wood, D, is secured by screws E fitting snugly between the top of the cup and the wall of the recess, and upon the top of the rim B."
"This arrangement makes a very simple, cheap, and efficient fastening, and is applicable for securing said cups into wood or metal for any other purpose."

Make the handles and set the bowl
Make the handles and set the bowl
**Bowl.** Cut the bottom 3 cm off a clean tin can and punch holes in its base. Solder a ring of tinplate round its outside 5 mm below its top as the flange B.
**Handles.** Cut two hardwood handles, one with a round end for the bowl, and join them at the other end of that round with a butt hinge. In the lower handle's round end, cut a hole the bowl drops through, and round it a stepped recess: a shoulder for the flange to rest on, widened above it.
**Ring.** Cut a hardwood ring that fits the widened part, between the bowl's top and the recess wall, and bears on the flange. Screw it down with three screws into the handle.
**Press.** Screw a hardwood dome to the upper handle so it closes into the bowl.
**Test.** Squeeze lemons over a glass. Then unscrew the ring, lift the bowl out, clean it and set it back.

History and honest limits
History and honest limits
**James L. Jensen** of Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, received US 104,159, dated 14 June 1870. His handles C carried the recess into which the bowls were attached, and he held the fastening applicable for securing cups in wood or metal for other purposes. His claim is the annular flange below the cup's top, the open circular recess in the handle, and the independent annular ring detachably fastened.
**Honest limits.** A tin can with a soldered flange stands in for his bowl. The notebook gives the most a screw could carry; its forces, lengths and screw counts are examples. Your squeezing and cleaning are the result.
