Natural Cork Sheet: Boiled Bark Sliced Flat
Cork is the bark of the cork oak, stripped without felling the tree. Boiled and pressed flat, a plank of it can be sliced into sheets for gaskets, pinboards and underlay, the same way the bark is prepared for stoppers.

Season, boil and flatten the bark
Season the bark planks, boil them for an hour and let them dry flat under a light weight, exactly as for cork stoppers.

Mark the thickness
Mark the thickness
Scrape off any hard outer crust. Gauge a line round the edge of the plank at the sheet thickness you want, for example 3 to 6 mm.

Stand the plank on edge against the band saw fence and slice off one sheet at a time, feeding slowly so the soft cork does not tear.

Sand flat
Lay each sheet on sandpaper on a flat board and rub both faces even. Store the sheets flat.
