Willow Bark Tea — Nature's Pain Reliever (Precursor to Aspirin)

Harvest Willow Bark

The active compound — salicin — is found in the inner bark (cambium) of willow trees, particularly white willow (Salix alba), crack willow (S. fragilis), and purple willow (S. purpurea). Young branches (1-3 years old, 1-3cm diameter) have the highest concentration.

In spring or early summer, cut several young willow branches. Score the bark lengthwise with your knife and peel it away from the wood. The outer bark is rough and grey; the inner bark beneath is green-white and moist — this is what you want.

Scrape the inner bark away from the outer bark in thin strips. Fresh inner bark can be used immediately, or dried for storage. Spread strips on a rack in shade and air-dry for 3-5 days. Dried bark stores for months.

Understanding Salicin — The Science

Willow bark contains salicin, a glycoside that your body converts into salicylic acid — the same active compound that inspired acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), first synthesized by Bayer in 1897.

The Ebers Papyrus (Egypt, ~1550 BCE) prescribes willow for pain and fever. Hippocrates (~400 BCE) recommended chewing willow bark for inflammation. Viking-era Scandinavians and Anglo-Saxons used it widely — it appears in the Lacnunga (Anglo-Saxon medical text) and Norse herbal traditions.

Willow bark works more slowly than aspirin (onset ~1 hour vs 20 minutes) but has a gentler, longer-lasting effect with fewer stomach side effects. This is because the body must first convert salicin through the liver.

Brew the Decoction

For a decoction (stronger than simple steeping): place 2-3 tablespoons of dried bark (or a good handful of fresh bark) in 500ml of cold water. Bring slowly to a low boil, then reduce heat and simmer gently for 15-20 minutes. Do not boil vigorously — excessive heat degrades some active compounds.

The water will turn a warm amber-brown color and develop a distinctly bitter taste. This bitterness is the tannins and salicin — it means it is working.

For a simpler infusion (milder): pour boiling water over the bark in a cup and steep for 10-15 minutes. This extracts less salicin but is quicker.

Strain and Serve

Strain through cloth to remove bark fragments. Add honey to offset the bitter taste — the Vikings would have used honey as their primary sweetener.

Drink one cup (250ml) for headache, muscle pain, joint inflammation, or fever. Effects begin within 30-60 minutes and last 4-6 hours. A second cup can be taken after 4 hours if needed.

The typical medicinal dose of willow bark is equivalent to 60-120mg of salicin per day (a standard aspirin tablet contains 325mg of acetylsalicylic acid, roughly equivalent to 100mg salicin).

5

Dry and Store for Later Use

Dry extra bark strips thoroughly in shade (direct sun degrades active compounds). Store in a dry container — a birch bark box, linen pouch, or clay vessel with a lid. Properly dried willow bark retains potency for 6-12 months.

Powdered dried bark (ground with a mortar and pestle or between two stones) brews faster and stores more compactly than strips. This was the form most commonly carried in medieval and Viking-era travel kits.

Note: People allergic to aspirin should not use willow bark. It should not be given to children under 16 (same Reye syndrome risk as aspirin). Pregnant women should consult a physician before use.
