Traverse Board

A wooden board with a compass rose drilled full of holes, pegs on strings, and a way to record a ship's course and speed for a whole watch without writing anything down. Every half-hour, when the glass turned, the helmsman put a peg in the hole for the heading he had been steering; below, another set of holes took pegs for the speed measured by the log. At the end of the four-hour watch the board carried eight headings and eight speeds, and the mate could work up an average course and distance for the dead-reckoning plot. It exists because a working sailor could not necessarily read or write, the deck was wet and dark, and a memory of eight headings after four hours in a gale is not a memory anyone should navigate on.

Lay out the compass rose

Thirty-two points, not 360 degrees.

  1. Draw a circle and divide it into 32 equal points — 11.25 degrees each.
  2. Label them in the traditional order: North, North by East, North-north-east, and so on.
  3. Drill eight holes along each radius, from centre outward.
The eight holes per point are the eight half-hours of a four-hour watch. Position on the board encodes WHEN, and the radius encodes nothing else — this is a data structure made of wood.

Add the speed section

A separate grid below the rose records what the log said.

  1. Rule a grid of rows and columns beneath the rose.
  2. Columns are speed in knots; rows are the successive half-hours.
  3. Drill a hole at each intersection and attach pegs on lanyards.
Tie every peg to the board. A peg dropped on a heaving deck at night is gone, and a missing peg means a missing half-hour in the record — the reason they are on strings is the same reason a modern instrument's cap is captive.

Keep a watch

Run a simulated watch and fill the board.

  1. Every half-hour, peg the heading actually steered.
  2. Peg the speed from your log reading.
  3. Work outward from the centre so the sequence is unambiguous.
Do it in the dark, by feel, to see the real design. The holes are countable by finger, the points are learnable by rote — sailors recited the 32 points, called boxing the compass — and neither reading nor light is required.

Work up the average course

Turn eight headings and eight speeds into one position change.

  1. For each half-hour, resolve the run into north-south and east-west components.
  2. Sum each component over the watch.
  3. The totals give the distance made good and the course made good.
Averaging the ANGLES directly is wrong and it is the classic error — a watch spent alternately on north-east and north-west does not average to north-east-by-north, it averages to north. You must resolve into components first, which is vector addition done with a table and a pencil.

History and context

Traverse boards are documented from around the fifteenth century and were standard on European vessels for centuries. They belong to dead reckoning: from a known position, apply course and distance to get the next position. The chip log supplied speed, the compass supplied heading, the glass supplied time, and the board held the record between them.

The design assumes an illiterate user, deliberately. Ordinary seamen were often unable to read, and the helmsman was the only person who knew what had actually been steered. A pegboard lets that person record data accurately without writing, and lets the mate — who could write — read it off at the end of the watch. It is an interface designed around who is actually operating it, which is not a modern idea.

Errors accumulated relentlessly. Leeway from the wind pushing the hull sideways, currents, a helmsman's average error, and the chip log reading slightly low all compound over days out of sight of land. Dead reckoning was good enough for coastal work and terrifying for ocean crossings, which is the whole reason the longitude problem attracted a national prize.

Boxing the compass survives as a phrase, and the 32-point system persists in wind and swell descriptions. The board itself was displaced by the deck log book as literacy became general — and the underlying method, integrating heading and speed over time to update a position, is exactly what an inertial navigation system does now with gyroscopes and a processor.
