A thick, dark liquid produced by destructive distillation of coal. Contains hundreds of organic compounds including phenols, naphthalene, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Used as a wood preservative (creosote), waterproofing agent, and historically as a source of synthetic dyes and pharmaceutical precursors.
