Pyrolusite ore — naturally occurring manganese dioxide (MnO₂), the most abundant manganese mineral. A metallic-grey to black mineral used since the Palaeolithic as a black pigment (cave paintings at Lascaux), as an oxidiser in glassmaking (decolouriser), and in battery chemistry.
