Fine 220-grit sandpaper is the standard final sanding grit before applying stain, oil, or varnish to wood. The scratch pattern is fine enough that most finishes fill and hide it completely. Also used for sanding between coats of finish (scuff sanding) to promote adhesion without cutting through the previous coat.
