Live cochineal insects (Dactylopilus coccus) feeding on nopal cactus pads (Opuntia). The female insects produce carminic acid — the source of carmine, one of the most vibrant and lightfast natural red dyes. Historically the most valuable New World dye export, traded from Mesoamerica to Europe after Spanish conquest.
