Cinnabar ore — mercury sulfide (HgS), a bright red mineral that is both the primary ore of mercury and one of the most prized red pigments in history (vermillion). Used in Chinese lacquerware, Roman wall painting, and alchemical practice. Extremely toxic — mercury vapour released during roasting is lethal.
