Bell-Crank Vibrating Beater Churn: Beaters Rocked on Hung Fulcrums by a Cranked Shaft

Rhodes improved "the common churn" by the way he worked and hung its beaters. Clarkson Rhodes of Morrow, Ohio, received US 8,959, dated 18 May 1852, for a churn box whose top has a convex recess for the cranks to pass, ventilated by a perforated tin plate over a hole "some 3/4 or an inch in diameter." A shaft bent into a double bell crank turns across the top; rods from the shaft carry the fulcrum on which the beaters vibrate, and rods from the cranks give them "an alternate up and down motion." The internal work lifts out with the top for cleaning. This rung works out the beaters' swing, then prints the beaters and fulcrum hangers, bends the cranked shaft, and makes butter.

Read US 8,959

"The shaft 1, 1, is turned by crank c, of which works the cranks 5, 5, and rods 3, 3, 3, 3 which gives the beaters or dashers 4, 4, 4, 4, an alternate up and down motion, and thereby causing an effectual churning of the milk."

Print the parts

Print four beaters (/uploads/blueprints/bell-crank-vibrating-beater-churn-beater.stl) and two fulcrum hangers (/uploads/blueprints/bell-crank-vibrating-beater-churn-fulcrum-hanger.stl). Print in PETG at 0.2 mm layers, 30 % infill, 4 walls; wash before first use.

The cranked shaft

Bend a 6 mm steel rod into a shaft with two cranks of about 25 mm throw, pointing opposite ways, and a handle at one end. Lay it in notches in the ends of a food-safe box about 230 × 150 × 200 mm, under a plywood lid with a raised recess for the cranks and a small hole covered with perforated stainless sheet for air.

Hang the beaters

Hang each fulcrum hanger from the shaft beside a crank, on a loop of steel wire, and pin two beaters crossed on each hanger's lower hole. Join each beater's end to the nearer crank with a wire rod, eyes at both ends.

Crank and make butter

Let the heavy cream stand until it reaches about 15 °C, checked with the thermometer. Pour in 2 litres. Fit the lid and turn the handle steadily; time until the butter comes. Pour off the buttermilk, add cold water, churn a little and pour off again until it runs clear; work in a pinch of salt and weigh the butter.

History and honest limits

**Clarkson Rhodes** of Morrow, Warren County, Ohio, received US 8,959, dated 18 May 1852 (the drawing sheet is lettered "G. Rhodes"; the specification gives Clarkson). He did not confine himself to the number or form of the dashers. He claimed the beaters hung by rods from the shaft on a fulcrum and worked by the rods and bell cranks. **Honest limits.** A food-safe box, steel rod and printed beaters stand in for his. FDM prints hold food in their layer lines, so wash well and replace when worn. Your times and weights are the result.
