High-Carbon Steel Wire Rod: Billet Hot-Rolled to 9 mm and Coiled
Wire is drawn from rod, and the rod is rolled hot. In a rod mill a steel billet is heated above its recrystallisation temperature and passed through stand after stand of grooved rolls, each one narrower, until it is a round rod about 9 mm thick. The rod is laid in a coil, ready to be cleaned and drawn into wire.
