Building a Debris Hut — Emergency Forest Shelter
The gold standard of primitive shelters. No tools, no cordage needed. A well-built debris hut keeps you warm in sub-zero temps using body heat and insulation alone.

Choose Site
Choose Site
Level ground, slightly elevated. Use natural windbreaks. Avoid dead standing trees. Clear ground of rocks.

Sturdy branch, 2.5-3m. Prop one end on a stump ~90cm high, other end on the ground. Must hold debris weight.

Lean rib branches at 45° along both sides, spaced 15-20cm. Interior just wide enough for your body. Add horizontal lattice of twigs across the ribs.

Dead leaves, pine needles, moss, ferns. Push your arm in — if you touch sticks, add more. This is your insulation. 90cm is better.

15-20cm of dry leaves inside on the floor. Make a door plug from bundled debris. Seal from inside to trap body heat.
