Riving Planks from a Log — Splitting Timber Along the Grain with Wedges

Before sawmills, every plank was riven — split from a log using wedges and mallets. Riving exploits the natural grain of the wood: a wedge driven into the end grain propagates a crack that follows the fibres, producing a plank that is stronger than any sawn board because no fibres are cut across. Every Viking longship, every medieval roof, and every Iron Age door was built from riven timber.

The technique is simple but requires reading the wood. A straight-grained log splits cleanly into halves, quarters, and eighths. Each successive split reduces the section until planks of the desired thickness are reached. Crooked grain, knots, or spiral growth cause the split to run off-line, ruining the plank. Selecting the right log is half the skill.

Iron wedges transformed riving from a slow stone-age process into an efficient production method. A smith's iron wedge driven by a wooden maul splits a log in minutes. Combined with an iron drawknife for smoothing, riving produces finished planks faster than pit-sawing and with superior strength.

1

Select a straight-grained log

Choose a freshly felled log at least 25 cm in diameter and as long as the planks you need. The most important quality is straight grain — sight down the length of the log and look for bark fissures that run parallel to the axis. Avoid logs with visible spiral twist, large knots, or forks. Oak, ash, and chestnut rive well. Elm and sycamore have interlocked grain and resist splitting. Green (freshly cut) wood rives far more easily than seasoned wood.
2

Split the log in half

Stand the log on end or lay it on two supports. Place an iron wedge on the end grain at the centre of the log, aligned with any visible radial crack. Drive the wedge with a heavy wooden maul or sledgehammer until a crack opens across the full diameter. Insert a second wedge further along the crack to keep it open, then drive the first wedge deeper. Alternate wedges along the split until the log separates into two halves.

3

Quarter each half

Split each half into quarters using the same wedge technique. Place the wedge on the flat face of the half-log, aligned with the pith (the centre of the original log). The split follows the radial grain lines outward from the pith to the bark. Quartered sections are the most stable timber for building — the grain runs straight through the thickness, minimising warping as the wood dries.
4

Rive planks from the quarters

Each quarter can be split further into planks. For a 25 cm log, each quarter yields 2-3 planks about 3-5 cm thick. Insert a thin iron wedge or a froe (an L-shaped cleaving blade) into the end grain of the quarter and drive it with a mallet. The froe is the traditional riving tool — its long blade controls the split line better than a wedge alone. Twist the froe handle to steer the split if it begins to run off-centre.
5

Correct wandering splits

If the split runs toward one face (producing one thick and one thin plank), apply downward pressure on the thicker side. In riving, the thinner piece bends more and the crack follows the bend. By bending the thicker piece, you redirect the crack back toward the centre. This correction only works while the split is still propagating — once the plank separates, the thickness is set.
6

Smooth the riven surface

Riven planks have a rough, fibrous surface that follows the grain. For structural use (roof boards, ship planking), this surface is acceptable — the intact grain fibres make it weather-resistant. For finished work, smooth the surface with a drawknife on a shaving horse, or with an iron adze for larger pieces. A drawknife removes thin shavings and can bring a riven plank to a smooth, even thickness in minutes.
