The Wire Raisin Seeder: Springy Wires Closer Than a Seed

Raisins from seeded grapes carry hard pips, and picking them out one by one is slow and sticky. William S. Scales of Everett, Massachusetts, assignor to John B. Humphrey and Joseph H. Clarke of Somerville, received US 511,803, dated 2 January 1894 (filed 18 March 1893), for a raisin-seeder: a hand block with "several parallel bent yielding seed-retaining wires" across a hollow in its underside, with spaces between them "less than the width or thickness of the seeds". This rung works out which seeds a given gap holds, then makes a wire seeder and seeds a batch of raisins.

"The spaces between said wires are less than the width or thickness of the seeds, so that as the raisin laid upon a flat surface as a table for instance is compressed by said device, the seeds will pass between and be retained by said wires, after which the crushed and seeded raisin may be removed by hand." "The raisins are extremely sticky, and thereby difficult to remove, but in practice it has been found that by soaking them in water the trouble is lessened".

Make a wire seeder and seed raisins

Measure the width of a dozen seeds from seeded grapes or raisins with the ruler, and pick a gap a little under the smaller ones. Saw a hardwood block to fit the palm and cut a shallow groove across its underside. Bend spring steel wire into short U-shapes and drive their ends into the block either side of the groove, spaced at your chosen gap. Soak the raisins in water. Lay one on the table and press the block down on it. Lift the block, take off the raisin, and tap the seeds out of the wires. Count seeds removed against seeds left, and compare with the notebook.
