Valveless Cone Air Dasher: A Hollow Cone and Four Tubes, Nothing to Wear Out

Gridley wanted to force air under the cream "without the employment of valves or other movable parts in the dasher, which are liable to get out of order," and without a hollow handle. Josiah A. Gridley of Southampton, Massachusetts, received US 6,411, dated 1 May 1849, for a churn-dasher of a straight round stick with a hollow cone on its lower end. Near the apex are four holes, more or less, through the cone; from them small tubes run down the outside to near its base, ending in open ends above the base. Forced into the cream, the cone traps air, which is drawn out through the tubes and disperses through the cream. This rung works out the air the cone holds, then prints the cone with its tubes in one piece, fits it to a stick, and makes butter in a jar.

A hollow dash that carries air down before it

The embedded blueprint traps air in a hollow cylinder and squeezes it out over a fixed block. Gridley's cone needs no block, spindle or valve.

"When this dasher is forced into the cream it incloses and compresses a quantity of air; and as the cream rushes up into it the air is drawn out through the tubes (a partial vacuum being created at their openings above the cone) and disperses through the cream, and agitates it as other air dashers. It is obvious that other figures than a cone would answer, and would be substantially the same thing."

Print the cone

Print the cone base-down in one piece (/uploads/blueprints/valveless-cone-air-dasher-cone.stl): a hollow cone 90 mm across with four tubes from holes near its apex down the outside to just above its base, and a socket for the stick. Blow through each tube to check it is clear. Print in PETG at 0.2 mm layers, 30 % infill, 4 walls; wash before first use.

Fit the stick

Glue a 12 mm hardwood dowel, as long as the jar is deep plus 150 mm, into the cone's socket.

The churn

Take a tall wide jar about 170 mm across and drill its lid at the centre for the stick.

Dash and make butter

Let the heavy cream stand until it reaches about 15 °C, checked with the thermometer. Pour in 1 litre. Work the stick up and down like a common dasher, lifting the cone clear of the cream each time so it fills with air; watch for bubbles from the tubes. Time until the butter comes. Pour off the buttermilk, add cold water, churn a little and pour off again until it runs clear; work in a pinch of salt and weigh the butter.

History and honest limits

**Josiah A. Gridley** of Southampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, received US 6,411, dated 1 May 1849. His cone was "of metal or other suitable material" and his handle "a straight round stick." He claimed the dasher made concave, with openings around it for dispersing air through the cream, without valves. **Honest limits.** A printed cone stands in for his metal one, and a jar for his churn. The notebook's figures are estimates. FDM prints hold food in their layer lines, so wash well and replace when worn. Your times and weights are the result.
