Air Hose: Couplings with Two-Bead Crimped Ferrules
A rubber hose becomes an air hose when couplings are fixed to its ends. John Keenan's fitting (US 4,453,746, 1984, for railway airbrake hoses) has a stem with a stop flange, ridges and a bulbous tip; a ferrule is crimped over it in two beads, the second ending at the bulb's widest point and flaring out so it cannot cut the hose. If a ferrule fails in the field, a band clamp over the ridged recess holds the hose without the crimping machine.
The patent gives no sizes or materials. The picture: the patent's Fig. 3.

Push the hose onto the coupling stem
Push the hose onto the coupling stem
Slide a ferrule over the hose. By hand, push the hose end over the coupling's stem (52), past the bulbous tip (58) and the ridges (62), until it butts against the stop flange (54).

Crimp the ferrule in two beads
Crimp the ferrule in two beads
Crimp the ferrule into two beads. The first (68) runs from the recess behind the flange (56), over the flange, to the recess above the ridges. The second (70) ends at the bulb's widest point; the ferrule's end flares out so it cannot pierce the hose.

Fit the other end
Fit the hose nipple's stem into the other end of the hose the same way: a ferrule, pushed to the flange, crimped in two beads.
