Boric Oxide: Boric Acid Heated Slowly Past 300 °C

Boric oxide, a main part of borosilicate glass, is boric acid with its water driven off. Heated, boric acid gives off steam at about 170 °C and turns to metaboric acid; above 300 °C it loses the rest and leaves a clear glassy oxide. Heat it slowly, or it froths and gums. Instructions

1

First heat

Weigh the boric acid into an iron crucible and warm it gently to about 170 °C, checked with the pyrometer, stirring, while it gives off steam.

Over 300 °C

Raise the heat slowly above 300 °C. More steam comes off; go slowly so it does not froth up and gum. Hold it until no more steam rises and it settles to a clear glass.
