Bunsen Burner: Central Gas Jet, Air Holes and Mixing Tube (Roscoe & Schorlemmer, Treatise on Chemistry I, 1905)

The laboratory gas burner. Gas from a hose comes out of a small central jet in a block on a heavy base; as it rushes up the tube above, it draws air in through holes in the block, and the mixture burns at the top with a hot, smokeless, pale blue flame of two cones. Close the holes and it burns with an ordinary yellow luminous flame. Result: a burner giving a hot non-luminous flame for laboratory heating. Source: H. E. Roscoe and C. Schorlemmer, A Treatise on Chemistry, vol. I (1905), §§ 462-463, Figs. 188-189. Unknown: materials and sizes. Picture: the book's Figs. 188-189.

Instructions

1

Make the base, block and jet

Make a heavy round base. On it fix a block with a small central jet pointing straight up, a side nozzle for the gas hose leading into the jet, and holes through the block's sides round the jet for air. Not given: materials, sizes, the jet bore.

2

Fit the tube

Fit an upright tube on the block over the jet and the air holes, so the gas passes up it unburnt and draws in air through the holes. Not given: its length and bore.

Light and use it

Push the gas hose onto the nozzle, turn on the gas and light it at the top of the tube. With the air holes open the flame is non-luminous, pale blue and much hotter, with an inner and an outer cone; with them closed it is luminous. With too much air it burns unsteadily and the inner cone turns green; more still and the flame strikes back down the tube and burns at the jet, giving off an unpleasant smell of acetylene: turn off and relight.
