Carbon Dioxide Gas: Chalk and Dilute Acid, Collected from the Bottom Up

Carbon dioxide, Black's fixed air, is locked up in chalk and limestone, and an acid sets it free. It is half as heavy again as air, so it can be poured from one vessel into another and fills a bottle from the bottom up. In a closed space it suffocates: work in an open, airy room. The picture: our diagram of the generating bottle, the delivery tube and the candle test.

Set up

Put lumps of chalk in a wide bottle. Fit a stopper with two holes: one for a funnel tube reaching nearly to the bottom, one for a bent delivery tube just through the stopper. Lead the delivery tube down to the bottom of an upright collecting bottle.

Fill and test

The heavy gas fills the collecting bottle from the bottom and pushes the air out at the top. Let a lighted candle down into the mouth to show the gas is there, then stopper the bottle and fill the next.
