Cleaning and Degreasing Animal Bones
Bone for tools, beads, needles and study must be free of flesh and fat: left in, the fat slowly seeps out, yellows the bone and smells. Simmer (do not boil hard) to loosen the tissue, scrape it off, then soak the bones in warm water with detergent, changing it until no more grease rises.

Cover the bones with water in a stockpot and keep it at a gentle simmer, not a rolling boil, which can crack bone, until the meat and gristle come away.

With gloves on, scrape off the remaining tissue with a knife and scrub with the brush.

Soak the bones in a bucket of warm water with a squeeze of detergent. Change the water every few days for one to two weeks, until no greasy film forms on top.

Rinse well and dry slowly in an airy, shaded place; fast drying in hot sun can crack them.
