Copper(II) Oxide by Heating Copper in Air

Copper heated in air at about 300–800 °C combines with oxygen to form black copper(II) oxide: 2 Cu + O₂ → 2 CuO. Industry makes most copper oxide while extracting copper from its ores, but heating the metal is the direct route. The oxide is the starting point for copper salts such as copper sulfate.
