Copper Oxide: Copper Sulphate Heated to Intense Redness

Black copper oxide, CuO, from copper sulphate, as Thorpe's Dictionary (1912) gives it: the sulphate needs intense redness, much hotter than the carbonate, and gives off sulphur oxides as it breaks down. Furnace with a flue, fume hood. The picture: our diagram.
