Engraving Burin: Square Steel Graver in a Mushroom Handle
The burin cuts a V-shaped groove in copper and other soft metals: a tempered steel shaft, usually square or lozenge in section, ending in a sharp cutting face, set in a mushroom-shaped handle cradled in the palm and held at about 30° to the plate. Forge and harden a square shaft, turn a handle, and grind the face.

Forge the shaft
Draw tool steel to a square shaft about 3 mm across and 11 cm long (our size), with a tang at one end. Bend the shaft slightly near the tang so the point clears the plate when the handle is low.

Harden the shaft in water and temper it to a pale straw, so the point is hard but does not snap.

Turn the handle
Turn a beech mushroom handle on the lathe, saw a flat on one side so the burin lies low on the plate, drill it and drive the tang in.

Grind the face
Grind the face
Hone the cutting face flat on the stone at an angle across the end, and the two lower sides to a sharp corner, checking the point under the loupe.
