Ferric Oxide: Hydroxide Precipitated from Ferric Chloride with Ammonia, Then Heated
Ferric oxide, Fe2O3, made by way of the hydroxide as Thorpe's Dictionary (1912) gives it. Ferric chloride solution with excess ammonia throws down a bulky, brown, slimy hydroxide, which shrinks a great deal as it dries. Heated, it slowly gives up its water at 320 °C; taken to dull redness it suddenly contracts and glows, and is then much less soluble in acids.

Precipitate with excess ammonia
Precipitate with excess ammonia
Add excess ammonia to ferric chloride solution: the hydroxide comes down as a bulky, brown, slimy precipitate. No amounts are given. Ours: stir in a beaker in a fume hood.
Materials for this step:
Ferric Chloride Solution1 as requiredTools needed:
Ammonia Solution - 25-28%
Glass Beaker
Stirrer
Fume Hood (Ducted)
Chemical Splash Goggles

Filter, wash and dry (ours)
Filter, wash and dry (ours)
Ours: filter off the precipitate, wash it with water and dry it; it shrinks a great deal as it dries.
Tools needed:
Filter Paper
Glass Funnel - Stemmed
Wash Bottle
Distilled Water

Heat to dull redness
Heat to dull redness
Heat the dry hydroxide: it gives up its water slowly at 320 °C. Taken on to dull redness, the anhydrous oxide suddenly contracts and glows brightly. Ours: a porcelain crucible in a muffle furnace.
Tools needed:
Crucible with Lid (Porcelain)
Muffle Furnace
Crucible Tongs
