Gas Washing Bottle: a Single-Neck Bottle Made into a Safety Wash-Bottle (Gattermann, 1901)
A gas washing bottle that cannot suck back. A plain single-neck bottle is closed with a two-hole cork: through one hole a wide straight tube, and through it a narrow delivery tube bent at a right angle that reaches almost to the bottom; through the other the outlet. Gas bubbles up through the liquid (for example concentrated sulphuric acid to dry it). If the gas flow falters and the far vessel starts to suck, air enters between the two tubes and relieves it, so no liquid is drawn back.
Result: a safety wash-bottle for washing or drying a gas stream.

Cut and bend the tubes
Cut a straight glass tube as wide as possible to pass through the cork. Cut a narrower delivery tube, long enough to reach almost to the bottom of the bottle, and bend it at a right angle in the flame. Bend an outlet tube. Not given: bores and lengths.

Assemble and use it
Bore a cork with two holes to fit a single-neck bottle. Push the wide straight tube through one hole and the outlet through the other. Pass the delivery tube down through the wide tube so it reaches almost to the bottom of the bottle. Pour in the washing or drying liquid (for example concentrated sulphuric acid to dry hydrochloric acid gas) so the delivery tube dips in it, and pass the gas in through the delivery tube and out through the outlet. If the gas current becomes irregular and the far vessel starts to suck back, air enters between the delivery tube and the wide tube and relieves it, so no liquid is drawn back. Not given: the bottle size.
