Gate-and-Wing Dasher Churn: A Rising Gate Swings Two Wings Down
King set out to produce "a combination of a variety of motions in the dashers" by which "the labor in the process of churning is lessened."
Charles King of Scipio, New York, received US 4,449, dated 4 April 1846, for a churn-dasher in an oblong box with a semicircular bottom. A shaft runs lengthwise at the centre of the bottom's circle. A handle on a cross-piece lifts a vertical gate dasher whose slotted posts embrace the shaft; two oscillating dashers of triangular head-pieces and slats hang on the shaft, their inner ends tied to the gate's top rail, so their outer ends "perform a segmental motion downward" as the gate rises, and back.
This rung works out the wings' swing, then prints the head-pieces, gate and ends, bends a stainless bottom, and makes butter.

"The handle n being depressed, the opposite end of the arm or lever g rises, and consequently raises the vertical dasher. In consequence of the inner extremities of the oscillating dashers being attached to the top rail of the vertical dasher, the outer extremities of said dashers perform a segmental motion downward, and vice versa when the handle n is raised."

Print two end pieces flat (/uploads/blueprints/gate-and-wing-dasher-churn-end.stl), the gate dasher with its two slotted posts (/uploads/blueprints/gate-and-wing-dasher-churn-gate.stl), and four triangular head-pieces (/uploads/blueprints/gate-and-wing-dasher-churn-head-piece.stl), each with a segmental side, slat sockets and an extension for its tie. Print in PETG at 0.2 mm layers, 30 % infill, 4 walls; wash before first use.

Cut a 0.5 mm stainless sheet 170 mm wide and about 315 mm long, deburr it, and bend it round a 130 mm form into a U with 55 mm straight sides. Seat it in both end pieces' grooves in silicone. Pass a 12 mm hardwood dowel through both ends at the circle's centre as the shaft.

Slide the gate's slotted posts over the shaft, and between them hang two pairs of head-pieces on the shaft, one pair each side; glue 5 mm dowel slats into their sockets to make the two oscillating dashers. Tie each head-piece's extension to an end of the gate's top rail with a short pine slat on screws. Stand a pine post at one end, pivot a lever on it, hang a pitman from the lever to the gate's middle, and fit the handle.

Let the heavy cream stand until it reaches about 15 °C, checked with the thermometer. Pour in 700 ml. Work the handle steadily up and down; time until the butter comes. Pour off the buttermilk, add cold water, churn a little and pour off again until it runs clear; work in a pinch of salt and weigh the butter.

History and honest limits
History and honest limits
**Charles King** of Scipio, Cayuga County, New York, received US 4,449, dated 4 April 1846. Two legs at one end rose above the box to carry the cross-piece's gudgeons. The head-pieces "need not be of one entire piece, but may be made with two arms ... so as to produce what may be called twin-dashers." He claimed "the combination of the vertical dasher with the oscillating dashers."
**Honest limits.** Stainless sheet and printed parts stand in for his wooden box and dashers. FDM prints hold food in their layer lines, so wash well and replace when worn. Your times and weights are the result.
