Jigsaw: Motor-Rocked C-Frame on a Leaf Spring (Heese, US 2,692,622, 1954)
A small electric jig saw for curved cuts. A long U-shaped frame holds a fine blade stretched between its two arms. The frame's back end hangs on an L-shaped leaf spring, and an eccentric on a motor shaft rocks its lower arm up and down, so the blade saws through a slot in the table while the spring flexes. A wing nut tensions the blade; sawdust falls into a box below.
Result: a compact motor-driven jig (scroll) saw.

Build the base and table
Build the base and table
Make a long flat base, wider at the front. Fasten a long upright support along it, its back end a separate upright strip. Across the wide front stand two walls with matching upright guide slots, carrying a level table that overhangs to the front with a slot for the blade. Under the overhang set a removable open box for sawdust. Not given: materials, sizes.

Make the C-frame and spring hinge
Make a U-shaped blade frame: an upper arm, a lower arm, and a back piece made in one with the lower arm and bolted to the upper. Fix the upright part of an L-shaped leaf spring to the support's back strip; its flat part goes into a slot in the frame's back piece and is held by the same bolt. The frame can now swing up and down on the spring, its lower arm running in the walls' guide slots under the table.

Fit the motor and eccentric
Fix an electric motor on the wide front of the base with its shaft running across under the frame's lower arm. Put two bolts down through the lower arm, one each side of the shaft; on them hang a lower strip resting on nuts and an upper strip under the arm, with a coil spring on each bolt pushing the strips apart. Fix an eccentric on the motor shaft between the two strips: as it turns it rocks the frame. Not given: the motor, the throw.

Fit the blade clamps and use it
Fit the blade clamps and use it
On the lower arm fix a strip with a forked end that hooks under the blade's lower pin. On the upper arm fit a bracket with a cross pin; an arm rocks on it, its forked front end over the blade's upper pin, its back end pulled down by a bolt with a wing nut. Add forked guide strips above and below the table. To fit a blade, loosen the wing nut, hook both pins and tighten the nut to stretch the blade straight. Switch on and feed the work across the table. Ours: a pinned coping-saw blade.
