หลัว (lua) is a container shaped like a krabung, with a round mouth, a square tapered bottom and ears at the rim, for vegetables and fruit; in some places it is called kheng. This blueprint weaves a real lua to the sizes in the source.

Square-bottomed baskets, before it

The krabung is close-woven with a rattan rim; the lua has an open-weave base, a close-woven body and a rim of folded standing strips, with no rattan binding.

Strips and base

Split wide strips from ruak bamboo skin. Weave the base in open plain weave as a square sheet, then bend the strips up vertically.

Body

Weave close plain weave round and round up to the mouth, finishing with phlai strips up to the rim.

History and limits

The lua is shaped like a krabung and in some places is called kheng. Take care with the knife when splitting strips.
