Masher, Pounder and Mincer: Three Kitchen Tools on One Handle

A masher, a steak pounder and a mincing knife are three tools to buy and store. Jacob J. Diehl of York, Pennsylvania, received US 93,862, dated 17 August 1869, for a kitchen utensil combining "a vegetable-masher, steak-pounder, and mincing-knife": an ordinary masher with a plate of pyramidal teeth fixed to its foot, and a mincing knife whose shank passes through the handle and is fastened by a nut, its back resting in a groove between two rows of teeth. This rung compares head weights, then prints the toothed head, fits a knife from spring steel, and uses the tool three ways.

A masher before it

The embedded blueprint mashes with a wire coil. Diehl's masher is solid, with teeth to pound and a knife to mince.
3

Read US 93,862

"D is the mincing-knife, provided with a shank, a, which passes through the handle A. The back of the knife rests in a groove in the plate C, between two rows of the teeth, and is secured by a nut, b, screwed on to the shank a, or by equivalent means. This knife is preferably detached, when the implement is in use as a masher or pounder."

Print the head

Print the head with its toothed face, groove and socket (/uploads/blueprints/masher-pounder-mincer-head.stl) at 100 % infill for weight. Print in PETG at 0.2 mm layers, 30 % infill, 4 walls; wash before first use.

Make the knife

Cut a crescent 56 mm across from spring steel strip and file its curved edge sharp. Epoxy a 5 mm steel rod, threaded at its end with the die, to the middle of its back as the shank, 230 mm long.

History and honest limits

**Jacob J. Diehl** of York, Pennsylvania, received US 93,862, dated 17 August 1869. The masher is of ordinary form with a plate or metallic block of pyramidal teeth fixed to it; the knife need not be removed when mashing. He did not claim combining a cleaver and steak pounder, which was known, but the detachable knife through the handle and its fit in the plate. **Honest limits.** A printed head stands in for wood and metal, and is lighter than cast iron. FDM prints hold food in their layer lines, so wash well and replace when worn. Your times are the result.
